Eating for Healthy Kidneys

Kidney-protective nutrition, practical dietary swaps, and a 7-day meal guide.

Eating to Protect Your Kidneys

Healthy eating can help lower the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Choose a balanced diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and appropriate protein. Limit foods high in sodium, heavily processed meats, and sugary drinks. Stay appropriately hydrated according to your health needs.

❌ CHOOSE LESS OFTEN ✅ TRY INSTEAD

Homemade noodles with vegetables and less salt

Fresh broth with herbs and wholesome greens

Freshly prepared fish or chicken

Grilled, baked, or steamed with natural seasonings

Sugary Soft Drinks & Milk Teas

High fructose corn syrup and refined sugar calories

Infused water with fresh cucumber or lemon slices

Frequently Salty Packaged Snacks

Chips, chicharon, and heavily salted junk food

Suitable fresh, lower-sodium snacks

Fresh sliced fruits, unsalted cucumber slices, or carrots

If You Already Have CKD

There is no single kidney diet for everyone. Many people with CKD are advised to reduce sodium.

KDIGO Guideline

< 2 Grams

Sodium Per Day

KDIGO recommends less than 2 grams of sodium daily (roughly 5 grams of table salt) for most people with CKD, with individualized exceptions.

Protein Target

~0.8 g/kg

Body Weight / Day

For many adults with CKD stages G3–G5 who are not on dialysis, a protein intake around 0.8g per kilogram of body weight per day may be advised.

Potassium, phosphorus, protein, and fluid limits depend on blood-test results, kidney function, medicines, nutritional status, and dialysis treatment.

Do not automatically avoid bananas, tomatoes, or all high-potassium foods just because you have CKD. People on dialysis may need more protein than people with CKD who are not on dialysis. Always ask your doctor or renal dietitian for a personalized plan suited to you.

⚠️ A kidney-friendly diet is personal. Food choices can help protect kidney function, but no diet can guarantee that dialysis will never be needed.
